Prepared to Lead

“You never know when God might be working through you, and you don’t even realize it.” - Jake '21

“They were the best ten days of my life. I was actually disappointed when I had to come home!” Over Christmas break, junior Jake Wassermann traveled to Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. While many travelers were headed for the region’s picturesque white sand beaches, Jake and four other WLC students were serving underprivileged children in the small village of Mahahual.

Jake shared the love of Jesus while teaching Spanish, art, reading, writing, and Bible lessons to children at Cruz de Cristo Misión Luterana, a mission congregation in the village. For many students, the educational services provided by the church are the only schooling they will ever receive. Witnessing the joy and gratitude of the families in Mahahual lit a fire within Jake to continue serving others.

“The moment I returned from Mexico, I went straight to WLC’s Campus Ministry Office to sign up for a Spring Break mission trip to Salt Lake City.”

The opportunities for spiritual growth and Christian service were among the top reasons Jake chose to attend Wisconsin Lutheran College. In addition to spreading the Gospel through missioning, he has strengthened his leadership skills by serving as a Resident Assistant and as the Spirit and Community Builder for the Warrior Events Board.

“I love kids. I’m really a five-year-old at heart.”

Jake is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and looks forward to a career as a Child Life Specialist, where he will help sick children in hospitals cope with intimidating surroundings and medical procedures. Jake’s coursework at WLC will give him a solid foundation in clinical psychology as he makes a difference in the lives of young patients. He views his future career not just as a job, but as an opportunity to share Christ’s unconditional love with others.
